About the Author

Prof. Jakob Abermann is a scientist specializing in glacier research, particularly in understanding their devastating effects and the science behind them – a field that makes a crucial contribution to global understanding. His work has taken him to some of the planet’s most remote regions, including Patagonia, the peaks of the Alps, and finally, Greenland’s stunning and dramatic landscapes.

This book is the result of countless journeys through Greenland – not just to explore and document its beauty, but to create something useful: a visual guide to 66 hiking and ski mountaineering routes around Nuuk.

Applying MVP thinking to printed matter

This project shows how the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) mindset – starting small and validating early – can be applied even in book publishing. The first edition, released in 2018, featured just 36 routes developed in only 6 weeks. That lean start proved the concept had value. Building on this foundation, the second edition—with 66 routes developed over 6 months—evolved into its most refined and complete form.

Reflection

As a screen-based, technical UX designer, this project was a welcome chance to reconnect with my first education in graphic design.

Print demands a kind of discipline that's more demanding and less forgiving than in the digital world. You triple-check everything because you can't fix errors with updates. Its technical depth lies in prepress workflows and color profiles. Machines, ink, paper—all of them impose their own rules. But when everything aligns, the result is a quiet confidence only print can deliver.

Thanks to Jakob for teaming up – both on the trails and on the printed page.
